Breadman's Diner is a favorite hangout for UNC students. For a mainstream diner, it has an excellent selection of vegetarian (though mostly ovo-lacto) options, located throughout the menu. Our waiter seemed knowledgeable about vegetarian and vegan needs, and was courteous and fairly prompt.

David chose the chili and rice dinner entree with corn bread ($4.95) and I went with a vegetable pita ($3.95) with a side order of sweet potato ($1.00; I was slightly surprised that the potato didn't come with my dinner). Breadman's has the usual soft drink selection, as well as alcoholic beverages.

David's dish was the better of the two, but the pita would have been on par had the veggies been served cooked rather than raw. I am not a big chili fan, however, I thought David's was surprisingly good. He said that he liked it though in spite of having too much of a "smoky" flavor. The corn bread (ovo-lacto) was a bit too dry, he felt, but was tasty.

The vegetable pita was so loaded down with vegetables that I had to eat it with a fork. I was sad to see that I received only half of a sweet potato, especially since it was so good - I would have complained had I not been so full from so many veggies.

Except for a fruit cup, there were no vegan desserts. An ovo-lacto vegetarian would have no problems with the usual ice-cream, pie, or cake.

We felt that the prices were pretty standard for a diner - a wide range of prices to choose from on any budget. About the only things lacking were comfortable booths - Breadman's had wooden benches that were attractive but not conducive for having a leisurely meal. It would also be nice to extend the diner's hours of operation to accommodate late night moviegoers and the Cat's Cradle nightclub crowd.

All in all, we were satisfied with our meal. In the mood for a good old diner? You'll not have problems finding filling vegetarian food at Breadman's.
