Outer Banks Weekend, Colington Island, NC

Thirty members of TVS, Vegetarian Society of Richmond, and the Hampton Roads Vegetarian Society took part in our first ever retreat. Thanks to the generosity of Richmond member Jerry Cook, who donated use of his beach house, we had an inexpensive and fun long beach weekend. We were also very lucky to have our dear friend, ex-cattle rancher turned vegan author and celebrity, "Mad Cowboy" (www.madcowboy.com) Howard Lyman and his wife Willow Jean, join us! (Read a review of Howard's 1996 TVS visit in The Grapevine.)

Note that if you expect to stay past 9:00 pm, you need to leave a piece of paper on your dashboard that says "Potluck" so the ranger on duty knows you are at the potluck and not still in the park. Colleen is a park ranger at the Eno River State Park and will lead us on a short hike at 5:30. Wear comfortable shoes for an easy hike. Take I-85 south from the Triangle to Exit 164 for Hillsborough; Right at stop onto Churton St; at 1st light, Left onto Mayo St.; at stop sign Left onto Orange Grove Rd; 2nd Right onto Virginia Cates Rd; see signs for Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area - follow signs to parking lot (remember to leave "Potluck" note as above!). We'll meet at 5:30 in the lot for the hike. To get to the potluck at 7:00 pm, walk from the parking lot on the gravel road past the "Authorized Vehicles Only" sign - Colleen's house is the second one on the road (you'll see the ranger truck parked in front of it.) If it's good weather the potluck will be outside.

Rondy is a long-time TVSer and has worked in the area of Animal Rights for 10 years. Her 1991 Masters thesis at Duke Divinity School was titled "Ethical Vegetarianism as Consistent with New Testament Themes". Her article on vegetarianism and Christianity in the purple Winter/Spring 1997 V11#1 Grapevine (an online version is available) kicked off our series on world religions and vegetarianism. Evelyn has a farm sanctuary north of Durham, is a veterinarian, and has written about and been interested in religion and animal rights issues for many years.

Directions to Rondy's home: From I-40, take the exit for Route 751 and turn South going toward Jordan Lake; in 3 miles as soon as you pass the Chatham County sign, take the next Left onto O'Kelly Chapel Rd; in exactly 2 miles turn Right onto Chatham Glen; it's the 3rd driveway on Left (park on grassy area by street).

First Night is a fun alcohol-free event in downtown Raleigh with a wide range of entertainment. Children's events will be at and near the NC Museum of History (at Wilmington & Edenton near Moore Square in downtown Raleigh) from 2-6:00 pm, with a "People's Procession" parade at 6:00. The children will have a New Year's countdown at 7 (which is midnight GMT!)-8:00 pm, culminating in fireworks. Other entertainment will go on until midnight at many indoor locations and with the final countdown outdoors. A $9 button available from area Blockbuster Video, Harris Teeter, and CVS Pharmacies (as well as on-site on the 31st for $14) gets you in to all of the entertainment - music, art, drama, magic, comedy, dance and more.

From 2-6:00 pm, TVS will provide children's activity helpers at North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences' Resolution Rocks activity on the museum's Mezzanine Level (the museum is near Edenton and Salisbury). Let Dilip know if you can volunteer (you get a number of benefits, including free admission to all of the First Night events, in addition to hanging out with fellow TVSers while helping children have a fun time); volunteer check-in is next door in the front lobby of the Museum of History.

At 6:00 pm, we'll have a pizza get-together at Theresa and Harvey Poorbaugh's house in Raleigh. Come to their home between 6:00 and 8:00 pm; we'll place an order for vegan pizzas to arrive around 7:15, so do call Harvey and Theresa (876-9337) so we can include your preferences if you'll be coming much after 6:30. Sometime after 8:00 we'll carpool over to First Night.

From Chapel Hill, Durham, and RTP, take 40 East to Wade Ave; at 440, go North (inner beltline) to exit 10 for Wake Forest Rd, and turn Left at light at bottom of exit to go North on Wake Forest; name will change to Falls of the Neuse; after almost 3 miles, pass St. Raphael's Church on Left and a light at Northbend, then take next Right onto Falls Church Rd (before Spring Forest Rd) and follow directions as above.

From Cary, take inner beltline to exit 10 and follow directions above.
