Potluck Dinner and talk by Harold Brown
(Potluck FAQ)
Durham Friends Meetinghouse
404 Alexander Avenue, Durham (See a map and directions)
The Farmer Brown Speaking Tour comes to the Triangle! Harold Brown of Farm Sanctuary will be speaking today at a potluck dinner (see a press release and a poster advertising the event); he will also have spoken at Duke University in Durham on April 13. After we eat, Harold will present a 45-minute talk, "Plant- vs. Animal- Based Agriculture: Sustainable Farming in the 21st Century". What are environmental, social, and health benefits of moving our farming basis to one founded on raising food crops instead of animals to be slaughtered? How can we rebuild our rural communities and where has the traditional family farm gone? Farmer Brown explains how agribusiness has changed the rural landscape and what we can do to reclaim our farming heritage.

Harold Brown was raised on a cattle farm in Michigan and spent half of his life in agriculture. As Outreach Coordinator for Farm Sanctuary, Harold is coordinating a campaign to encourage farmers to adopt sustainable farming practices and hosts the askfarmerbrown.org website. Harold Brown appears in Tribe of Heart's newly released documentary, Peaceable Kingdom, where he tells the powerful story of his transformation from "beef" farmer to vegan farm animal advocate.

Farm Sanctuary was founded in 1986 to combat the abuses of industrialized farming and to encourage a new awareness and understanding about "farm animals."  They have rescued thousands of animals left for dead or thought to be "unusable", have educated millions of people, and advocate for laws and institutional reform policies to prevent suffering and promote compassion.

Saturday, April 29 - 7:00 pm (or come at 5:30 pm for an optional walk)
Potluck Dinner and optional walk around Lake Lynn
(Potluck FAQ)
John Davis' and Jody Hamilton-Davis' home
7337 Fontana Ridge Ln (in northwest Raleigh off Leesville Rd, 2.4 miles south of 540 -- see directions below)
jrdpub@attglobal.net, 787-6280
Come at 7:00 pm for the potluck (vegan food only, please), or come at 5:30 pm for a walk around Lake Lynn before we eat. It's about a 3 mile walk from our house around the lake and back - most of it around the lake. It's a pleasant, easy walk along the lakeshore (all paved or boardwalk), and there are abundant ducks, geese, and turtles and the occasional great blue heron.

Parking is spread out throughout our neighborhood. Two cars should fit side by side in our driveway. Any on-street parking can be used, just don't block someone else's driveway and try to stay on the pavement and not the grass. We're on an "island" about 1/10 mile around. If you go past our house, keep to the left and you'll end up back at our house.

The house number, 7337, is on the right front of the garage. The front door is to the right of the garage.

From Durham or Chapel Hill: Take I-40 east to 540 (exit 283). Take 540 to exit 7, Leesville Rd (about 10 miles from here to our house). Turn right at the light at the end of the exit ramp (2.4 miles from here to our house). Pass through 3 lights. After the 3rd light, go about .8 (8 tenths) mile. Turn left onto Norman Ridge Ln (note: this is labeled Fontana Ridge Ln on most online maps). Turn right at the first stop sign onto Fontana Ridge Ln. Go around the curve to the left. We're the first townhome on the left immediately after the curve (second unit from left).

From Raleigh: Take the beltline (440) to exit 7 - Glenwood Ave / Crabtree Valley Mall. Turn at the end of the ramp onto Glenwood Ave/Rt 70 West - toward the mall. Turn right at the 4th light onto Creedmoor Rd (the mall is on your left; about 4 miles from here to our house). Turn left at the 3rd light onto Lynn Rd. It's a major 4-way intersection. There's a gas station on the left and a shopping center with a Kroger's on the right. Turn right at the 2nd light onto Leesville Rd (1 mile from here to our house). Go through 1 light (Glendower Rd; 1/2 mile from here to our house). Turn right at the third street after the light onto Norman Ridge Ln (note: this is labeled Fontana Ridge Ln on most online maps). Turn right at the first stop sign onto Fontana Ridge Ln. Go around the curve to the left. We're the first townhome on the left immediately after the curve (second unit from left).

From the Southwest: Take Rt 1 to the inner beltline - 440 North, toward Wake Forest. Then like the directions from Raleigh.

Saturday, July 15 - 7:00 pm
Potluck Dinner and discussion on Christian Theology and Vegetarianism
(Potluck FAQ)
Church of Reconciliation
110 N. Elliott Road, Chapel Hill (see directions below)
Our annual event considering the relationship of Christianity and vegetarianism continues this year with Karen McCollough moderating a panel discussion with three TVSers sharing their personal journeys. (See a poster advertising the event.) After we eat at this potluck event, we'll begin the program around 8:00 pm. Ed Haymond has done research in philosophy of religion, environmental ethics, science and theology and wrote his Master's thesis in 1998 on "An Exposition and Evaluation of Ethical Confluence in Animal Rights Philosophy and Christian Theology". Eilene Bisgrove grew up in a dairy farming family in Central New York State; at around age 12 she became a vegetarian after being troubled by eating her companion animal rooster, killed without her knowledge. Amanda Newman began her journey toward vegetarianism on reflecting in her family kitchen at age 14 that meat was once living. You can read about them in an article by Karen on page six (500 KB) of the June "Reconciler" (a newsletter from the Church of Reconciliation).

Like all potlucks, please bring a vegetarian and preferably fully plant-based vegan dish to share, plus your place setting and serving utensils. Karen is intent on impressing on non-vegetarian church members who attend how tasty and easy it is to be vegetarian, and asks you to please consider bringing more food than usual, and to include a recipe of what you made to serve as an introduction to those less familiar.

Directions: Take the US 15-501 exit off I-40 (Exit 270) and go South towards Chapel Hill. After Hotel Europa on Left, get in Right lane and exit onto Franklin Street. Go a few blocks to Elliott Rd. Turn right on Elliott Rd. The entrance to the Church of Reconciliation is off Elliott Road about 1/2 block North of Franklin Street (the opposite direction from Whole Foods). Turn right into the driveway at the church sign (also the driveway for Elliott Woods), and then take the first left into the church parking lot.

Saturday, July 29 - 7:00 pm
Restaurant Review, Azitra Indian Restaurant

8411 Brier Creek Parkway, Raleigh - see a street map
484-3939
Azitra is a fairly new restaurant – they opened less than a year ago. We were there on their opening night, and it was a bit disorganized, not to mention having wait staff who thought the paneer was tofu. We’ve been back a time or two since, and they have gotten things pretty much ironed out. Azitra is more upscale than the usual Indian restaurant in the Triangle. They have a pretty good selection of vegetarian dishes. Several of their dishes are even marked vegan on the menu, and they will make a special batch of vegan rice for us (they normally put butter in it). They have a website at www.azitra.us that includes their menu.

If you plan on attending, please let us know by 9pm on Thursday, July 27, so we can provide a firmer count for our reservation. You can let us know by email to restaurantreviews@trianglevegsociety.org or by phone at 787-6280. If you are confirming for more than yourself, please tell us how many. It is also good if you can provide an alternate method of contacting you such as a phone number in case of a last minute change in schedule. Those who RSVP will be sent a reminder email a day or two before the review including directions and/or a link to an online map of the restaurant. If you do not receive the reminder email by the evening before the review, please contact us to make sure we received your RSVP.

Also note that we will be out of town July 22 through early July 29, and our email access will be sporadic so don’t assume we will be able to see or reply to any emails (though we will check emails in time to submit a firm reservation count to the restaurant). If you need to reach us for other than RSVPing, leaving a voice message at the number above is a better choice.

Talks by Dr. Debrah Durham, a primatologist from PeTA

These aren't TVS events but may be of interest. Local student groups are hosting talks by Dr. Debrah Durham, a primatologist from PeTA, discussing the lives of primates, and the ethical implications of keeping primates captive for scientific experimentation and research. We believe, but don't have confirmation, that she is speaking at Duke University on November 8. She is speaking for NCSU's SPARC on November 9 at 8pm at 3118 Talley. Annual Holiday Party potluck and white elephant gift exchange
(Potluck FAQ)
Home of Barry and Tink Nakell
149 Dixie Drive, Chapel Hill (see a map)
919-967-7325
For 7 years, the Connelly Family in Durham kindly hosted this annual event, but this year we move to Chapel Hill to the Nakell residence. After we eat, we will, as has become tradition, have a low-/no-cost simple gift exchange - please bring something, wrapped, from around the house that you no longer use that others may find valuable; please bring one present per person. Children welcome - it would be helpful to call ahead to let the Nakells know what ages to expect. For this potluck, Tink and Barry will have holiday dishes and flatware, so no need to bring your own. TVS will provide a variety of juices and spritzers, as well.

Please be mindful of parking only in their driveway or in front of their house; there should be ample parking. Also, Barry and Tink kindly request that all please leave their shoes at the entrance of their home.

From East of Chapel Hill, take I40 W to exit 266, L onto Hwy 86, pass Weaver Dairy Rd after a few lights then a light at Westminister, get in L turn lane and turn L at Stateside, in 1 block R onto Dixie Dr, and they are on the left at 149 3-4 blocks on the L.

From West of Chapel Hill, take I40 E to exit 266 and turn R onto Hwy 86, then follow directions as above.

From downtown Chapel Hill, take Columbia St north - it will become MLK Blvd (previously known as Airport Rd), pass Estes Dr / Piney Mountain Rd / and Homestead Rd then take the first R onto Dixie Ln, in 1 block R onto Dixie Dr, then find their home at 149 2-3 blocks ahead on the L

First Night, Raleigh

www.artsplosure.org/hap_fnr.php
Artsplosure does a great job in downtown Raleigh each year in putting together a large event with many entertainers and a lot to do for New Year's Eve.  There are children's activities and crafts in the daytime, culminating in a 7:00 pm (midnight Greenwich mean time) fireworks new year's celebration. Into the night there are many cultural performances, such as participatory and exhibitory dance, magic, comedy, and world music. It draws tens of thousands of people.

TVS always gets a group together to volunteer, typically for a late afternoon shift.

Whether you are volunteering or even coming to First Night, we are planning a New Year's Eve pizza party at 6:00 pm at the home of Sam Taylor and Teresa Nunes. Their address is 7040 Sandy Forks Road, #201, in Raleigh (see a map - directions are below). On the day of the event, you can call 943-8784 if you need assistance with directions.

Vegan pizza will be donated by Lilly's Pizza. We are likely to have pizzas like: artichoke hearts, basil, pine nuts, and tomato slices; eggplant, sundried tomatoes, red bell peppers, and pistachios; the "Buddha" with oil, garlic, spinach, zucchini, and olives; the "Queen of Hearts" with oil, artichoke hearts, mushrooms; and onions, banana peppers, and green olives, mushrooms. Most will have VeganRella vegan "cheese", and some will have no "cheese" at all on half.

Directions to the pizza party: In Raleigh, take the Six Forks/North Hills Exit heading North from the beltline. Head North and pass Millbrook intersection and keep going! Come to Spring Forest intersection with Six Forks and turn Right. Immediately turn left at the next light (Sandy Forks). Sandy Forks will wind and continue until it hits Falls of the Neuse. Don't go quite that far! Before Falls of the Neuse, you will see a lighted entrance to condominiums on your left - they are called Sandy Forks Place. Enter and look to your left. The three-story building - 7040 - is our place. We are number 201. There will be small green lights strung around the porch. Please do continue to the end of this street and turn left and head straight. You will see dumpsters and parking spaces. These are the visitor's parking spots. You will have to walk back to our place or find a spot marked "visitor" in front of our specific building. Come and enjoy some delicious vegan pizza with us before you head off to your other evening activities. We will be at our place until about 9:30pm and then will head out to another event!
