Potluck and talk by Bob LeRoy, visiting from NY State, on vegetarian nutrition

Durham Friends Meetinghouse (a map is available, see directions below)

After we eat, Bob will give a presentation on vegetarian and vegan nutrition. He will bring some prepared comments to start the discussion, but very much wants this to be an interactive forum. Come with any and all questions you have about nutrition, and Bob will gladly address them in a detailed discussion on topics of your interest. Bob, a friend of several of us in TVS, has been Nutrition Advisor to the North American Vegetarian Society since 1990. He holds an M.S. degree in Nutrition and Public Health, and Ed.M. in Community Nutrition Education, and is a Registered Dietitian. He also earned certifications as Fitness Instructor and Exercise Test Technologist from the American College of Sports Medicine. He has lectured on topics related to nutrition, health and vegetarian eating at over 60 locations.

The Durham Friends Meetinghouse is located at 404 Alexander Avenue in Durham near Duke (very close to Duke Gardens). From I-40, take 751 North, staying on it when it zigs (University Drive near South Square) and zags toward Duke. Potluck Dinner and discussion on Christian Theology and Vegetarianism

Chapel Hill Friends Meeting House

After we eat, Rondy Elliott and special guest Linda McDaniel will speak on Christian Theology and Vegetarianism. Rondy is a long-time TVSer and has worked in the area of Animal Rights for 12 years. She is on the Board of Directors of the worldwide Christian Vegetarian Association and her 1991 Masters thesis at Duke Divinity School, "Ethical Vegetarianism as Consistent with New Testament Themes", is featured on their christianveg.com website. Her article on vegetarianism and Christianity in the purple Winter/Spring 1997 V11#1 Grapevine Grapevine kicked off our series on world religions and vegetarianism.

Rondy will start the program with Old Testament foundations for vegetarianism then introduce Linda McDaniel, M.Div., who will give most of the program. Linda is an ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church of South Carolina, and is driving almost 6 hours to be with us. She is a graduate of Candler School of Theology at Emory University and is married to a Methodist minister. She is presently the Outreach Co-ordinator for the Christian Vegetarian Association, and has as one of her goals to develop Bible study curricula for Christians to explore dietary choices and animal agriculture.

1129 Weaver Dairy Rd, Timberlyne Shopping Center, Chapel Hill
(919) 968-9266
Review the newest hot-spot in the triangle for us "veggie-lovers" - The Sage Cafe in Chapel Hill. It's located on 1129 Weaver Dairy Rd, in the Timberlyne Shopping Center, Exit 266 on I-40.

Sage Cafe is a family-run operation with a menu that is nearly entirely vegetarian with the exception of a tuna melt sandwich. Homa Jahannia, mother of Ramin Jahannia, who runs the front end, runs the kitchen. Homa creates daily specials for lunch and dinner. A house favorite, for example, is Persian Eggplant Paradise, which includes fragrant spices, split peas, and saffron basmati rice. Other offerings are baked manicotti, grilled tempeh and a homemade tiramisu that might rock your world.

After dinner, some of us are planning to catch a movie after dinner - the Chelsea Theater is near there so that may be a possibility. Chelsea Theater is also in the Timberlyne Shopping Center in Chapel Hill (919-968-3005).

RSVP: Please let either Kruti (krutid@yahoo.com) or Mehul (forMehul@yahoo.com) know if you're planning to come for the restaurant review, preferably before Thursday, November 20. That will help us make sure we can all be comfortably accomodated.
