2003 CALENDAR OF EVENTS
Saturday, January 11, 2003 - 7:00 pm After we eat, Bob will give a presentation on vegetarian and vegan nutrition. He will bring some prepared comments to start the discussion, but very much wants this to be an interactive forum. Come with any and all questions you have about nutrition, and Bob will gladly address them in a detailed discussion on topics of your interest. Bob, a friend of several of us in TVS, has been Nutrition Advisor to the North American Vegetarian Society since 1990. He holds an M.S. degree in Nutrition and Public Health, and Ed.M. in Community Nutrition Education, and is a Registered Dietitian. He also earned certifications as Fitness Instructor and Exercise Test Technologist from the American College of Sports Medicine. He has lectured on topics related to nutrition, health and vegetarian eating at over 60 locations. The Durham Friends Meetinghouse is located at 404 Alexander Avenue in Durham near Duke (very close to Duke Gardens). From I-40, take 751 North, staying on it when it zigs (University Drive near South Square) and zags toward Duke. Turn Right onto Duke University Rd, Left onto Anderson, Right onto Campus Dr, Left onto Alexander, and the hall is on the Left. From Raleigh, take I-40 to the Durham Expressway, head North to the exit for Ninth St and Swift Ave; turn away from Ninth St to go South on Swift Ave; turn Right on Campus Dr and Right onto Alexander Ave.
Saturday, January 25, 2003 - 7:00 pm After we eat, Rondy Elliott and special guest Linda McDaniel will speak on Christian Theology and Vegetarianism. Rondy is a long-time TVSer and has worked in the area of Animal Rights for 12 years. She is on the Board of Directors of the worldwide Christian Vegetarian Association and her 1991 Masters thesis at Duke Divinity School, "Ethical Vegetarianism as Consistent with New Testament Themes", is featured on their christianveg.com website. Her article on vegetarianism and Christianity in the purple Winter/Spring 1997 V11#1 Grapevine Grapevine kicked off our series on world religions and vegetarianism. Rondy will start the program with Old Testament foundations for vegetarianism then introduce Linda McDaniel, M.Div., who will give most of the program. Linda is an ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church of South Carolina, and is driving almost 6 hours to be with us. She is a graduate of Candler School of Theology at Emory University and is married to a Methodist minister. She is presently the Outreach Co-ordinator for the Christian Vegetarian Association, and has as one of her goals to develop Bible study curricula for Christians to explore dietary choices and animal agriculture. From Durham and points east, take I-40 past the airport, RTP, the Durham Expressway, NC 55, Fayetteville Rd, and NC 751. Take the next exit for NC 54, going west toward Chapel Hill. You'll go about 2.5 miles to an intersection where 15/501 and 54 Bypass exit; stay straight on the road (now called Raleigh Road and which further on becomes South Rd on the UNC campus), and don't take the bypass. The Meeting House will be on the right hand side just before the light at Country Club Road. From Chapel Hill and points west, take NC 54 east around Chapel Hill. After several miles, you will come to an intersection where if you take the first off-ramp, you will continue on NC 54 East; if you take the second off-ramp, you will turn onto Raleigh Rd. You want to turn onto Raleigh Rd, headed towards downtown Chapel Hill and the UNC campus. Therefore, do not take the first off-ramp with the sign that reads "NC 54 East". You should pass over the bridge, then take the next off-ramp for Raleigh Rd. The Meeting House will be on the right hand side just before the light at Country Club Road.
Saturday, February 8, 2003 - 7:00 pm From Durham / Chapel Hill via route 40 E, take the Morrisville/Aviation Parkway Exit (exit # 285). Turn RIGHT off exit ramp. Go 1.3 miles down the road. Turn LEFT at the 3rd stoplight onto Evans Road. Go 1.3 miles down Evans. Turn RIGHT at the 2nd stoplight onto NW Cary Parkway. Go 5.1 miles down Cary Parkway. Turn LEFT at the 5th or 6th stoplight onto Old Apex Rd (it's the intersection right before the railroad tracks). At the FIRST stoplight on Old Apex Rd (several minutes down the road), turn LEFT into Oxxford Hunt Subdivision on West Chatham. Take the 4th RIGHT on Trackers Rd. Their house is the 3rd on the LEFT (#216). You can park on the road, or in the cul-de-sac (Quid Ct) right across from the house.

Saturday, March 22 - 7:00 pm From I-40, take the Durham Freeway (NC 147) north to Duke St; exit onto Duke St. and proceed north (one way) on Duke St; go about 4 blocks, one block past Main St and Brightleaf Square, and Right onto Morgan. 206 N Duke is on the NE corner of Duke and Morgan. For parking, find street parking on Morgan St east of Duke St or further east on Morgan, under the apartment building. On the other side of the building, near the bus station, you'll find two parking lots with signs for West Village. You can also park here, in either lot. Enter through the building nearest the parking lot if the gates on Morgan are closed.

After we eat, John will present how, in the tradition of Gandhi, Buddha and Schweitzer, The ETHIC offers a unifying vision for people from all walks of life who wish to create a world where humans and other animals live free from violence and oppression. John is an internationally known writer and speaker on the subjects of nonviolence and compassion and a frequent lecturer at colleges, conferences, and community groups. Bring food to eat at the potluck at 6:00 pm or come at 8:00 pm for the party only. No RSVP necessary. Bring props and decorations, if you wish. For anybody interested, Martin will also have a pumpkin-carving party the week before on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 3:00 pm; he will have around a dozen pumpkins & several carving kits, but you can bring your own so that we'll have decorations for the Nov. 1 party.

Thursday, November 6 - 7:00 pm Photos taken at the event have been added to the Photo Album. Did humans descend from carnivorous apes or fruit-eating apes? Were humans designed to eat cooked foods? Did Americans eat any meat at all at the first Thanksgiving? Was Dennis Kucinich the first vegetarian to run for President? Was Hitler a vegetarian? Was Jesus a vegetarian? Rynn Berry, lecturer at New School for Social Research in New York City, will speak on myths and facts of vegetarian history. Mr. Berry is author of five books, including "Food for the Gods" and "Famous Vegetarians", and is currently in pre-press with a book called "Fruits of Tantalus: A History of Vegan Rawfoodism and the Origins of Cooking". He is the author of the entry on the history of vegetarianism in the United States in the forthcoming "Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink". He is a well known lecturer on these and related topics, and has spoken in venues around the world. Mr. Berry is historical advisor to the North American Vegetarian Society and is on the Advisory Board of Earth Save.

Saturday, November 22 - 6:30 PM Sage Cafe is a family-run operation with a menu that is nearly entirely vegetarian with the exception of a tuna melt sandwich. Homa Jahannia, mother of Ramin Jahannia, who runs the front end, runs the kitchen. Homa creates daily specials for lunch and dinner. A house favorite, for example, is Persian Eggplant Paradise, which includes fragrant spices, split peas, and saffron basmati rice. Other offerings are baked manicotti, grilled tempeh and a homemade tiramisu that might rock your world. After dinner, some of us are planning to catch a movie after dinner - the Chelsea Theater is near there so that may be a possibility. Chelsea Theater is also in the Timberlyne Shopping Center in Chapel Hill (919-968-3005).
