Carolina Animal Activists Together hosting Mike Hudak, Ph.D., speaking on "Our Federal Public Lands: Wildlife Habitat or Livestock Pasture?"

Livestock grazing in the Western U.S. over the past four centuries has caused severe environmental damage and ranks well above logging and mining in imperiling plant and wildlife species listed as endangered, threatened, or proposed for such listings. 260 million acres are annually devoted to livestock production, yet this enormous area produces only 2% of the US beef supply, while taxpayers fund more than 90% of the cost of raising lifestock on western public lands. Mike Hudak, visiting from Binghamton, NY and who, in 1999, established the Public Lands Without Livestock project of Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs to facilitate the work of informing the American people about the environmental and economic costs of public lands ranching, will give a slide presentation about livestock production in the American West and its impacts on the environment and native wildlife, as well as the national campaign to end the federal grazing program.
