Please contact Brian Donlon at doveganpeas@yahoo.com or 969-9287 if you can help.

Check out pictures and information about what we've done for this event in the past. This year we will again be asking area mayors to issue a proclamation about the event, and will have a literature table Saturday, March 17, to get information out to the public. We can again do things like work with a shelter or an area school, but we need one or two people to help coordinate this - please contact Dilip if you can help.

This is a fun event; we will be answering phones for public television and will have our banner in the studio. In between the short pledge breaks, we will have the opportunity to enjoy complimentary snacks and drinks, relax, and get a behind-the-scenes studio tour. Contact Dilip if you can be a volunteer. We will be meeting at the volunteer sign-in at the lobby of the UNC Center for Public Television at 10 T.W. Alexander Drive in RTP (549-7000) at 6:00 pm for registration and training. Words can't convey what all of us have experienced, whether by the images on TV, being in NYC or WashDC in person, or having loved ones who have been directly impacted by the crisis today. I know many of us may turn to meditation, worship, and other spiritual or religious experiences to help us to try to come to terms with what has happened.

For those seeking activities of justice through peace, and forums for discussing and understanding various approaches to come to terms with what has happened and what may happen, we are pleased to offer a calendar of local activities.

Sunday, September 16 - 2:00-4:00 pm
Meditation on Peace

Durham Friends Meetinghouse (a map is available, see directions below)

I am working with several organizations of peace and nonviolence to have a get-together on Sunday afternoon. We will meet 2:00-4:00 pm at the Durham Friends Meeting House. The meeting would be an occasion to be with each other, reflect on what has happened, meditate, and speak, as each individual sees fit. It won't be a potluck or involve food.

I have contacted the NC Society for Ethical Culture, NC Peace Action, Jain and Hindu groups, the Greens, Self-Realization, the Unitarians, and Quakers - if you can think of others, please let me know. Already, NCSEC and Peace Action have responded affirmatively.

May we strive toward a world of peace, hope, compassion, and reverence for all life.

The get-together will take place at the Durham Friends' Meetinghouse; a map is available. The hall is located at 404 Alexander Avenue in Durham near Duke (very close to Duke Gardens). Annual Thanksgiving Feast and Raffle

Cafe Parizade, Durham
People have loved the great spread of fantastic vegan food we've had the past few years at Cafe Parizade, one of the Triangle's finest restaurants with a gourmet flair for fresh ingredients and Mediterranean influences, so we returned for the third year in a row! For more information, see the 2001 Thanksgiving page.

Annual TVS Holiday Party

Dave, Renee, and Patrick Connelly's home
3 Bland Spring Place, Durham
544-6372, pedaling@mindspring.com
The Connelly family is hosting the Holiday Party potluck for the 4th year in a row. We will have a low-/no- cost simple gift exchange - please bring something, wrapped, from around the house that you no longer use that others may find valuable; please bring one present per person. Children welcome - it would be helpful to call ahead to let the Connelly's know what ages to expect. For this potluck, the Connelly's will have holiday dishes and flatware, so no need to bring your own.

Take I-40 to Exit 274 for NC 751 and go south toward Jordan Lake. Go 6/10 mile and turn left (Massey Chapel Road) - look for the sign for Stage Stop Development; take the first Right onto Bland Spring Place; their home is the second house on the left (red door).

Sunday, December 16 - 2:00-4:00 pm
Video showing. As a third followup activity to the Nov. 10 "A Dialogue for Peace and Justice", several videos will be shown, focusing on US foreign policy. Last time (Dec. 2), we saw some of the video from Understanding the Attack on America: an Alternative View, the first UNC teach-in about the events of Sept. 11, and much of an October M.I.T. talk by Noam Chomsky. We'll finish the Chomsky video then decide as a group which videos to see from a set we'll have or that you are welcome to bring.

First Night Raleigh
, http://www.firstnightraleigh.com
We will again help Artsplosure (www.artsplosure.org, 990-1158, 832-8699). First Night is a fun alcohol-free event in downtown Raleigh with a wide range of entertainment. Children's events will be at and near the NC Museum of History (at Wilmington & Edenton near Moore Square in downtown Raleigh), NC Museum of Natural Sciences, Bicentennial Plaza, and State Capitol grounds from 2-6 pm, with a "People's Procession" parade 6-6:30 pm. The children will have a New Year's countdown between 7:00 (which is midnight GMT!) and 8:00 pm, culminating in fireworks. Other entertainment will go on till midnight at many indoor locations and with the final countdown outdoors.

If you are not volunteering and need to buy a button, tickets will be available around the Triangle or via Artsplosure. When you volunteer, you get a free button, which gets you in to all of the entertainment - music, art, drama, magic, comedy, dance and more.

TVS will help children make tissue paper flowers ("Flower Power") from 3:15-5:45 pm at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, then we'll have a vegan pizza party at the home of Shreya and Kartik Patel, 2500 Bryarton Woods Dr, in Raleigh (directions below). Finally, we'll return to celebrate the many venues of entertainment and bring in 2002. Contact Dilip if you'd like to volunteer with First Night activities or to give your pizza preferences if you'll just meet for the party. We should make it to the Patel's by 6:15 or 6:30 pm, and then around 8:00 pm head back to enjoy First Night.
