and servers in action in our Photo Album. Then, on March 20, we worked
with students at Guy Phillips Middle School in Chapel Hill, showing the
children how to cook vegan meals; we focused on the taste, environmental

Dilip giving a presentation entitled "Why
Vegetarian"
Borders Books in Cary
Borders is located at 1751 Walnut St, in Cary, but due to the level of
traffic in the area, it's easiest to access the store via Buck Jones Rd.
From points outside of Cary, take I-40 East or West to Exit 293-A,
which will get you started on US-1 South/US-64 West towards Sanford and
Asheboro. You will soon see an exit sign reading "Cary via Walnut St.
Buck Jones Rd. Shopping Centers." Move to the far right-hand lane to Exit
the highway. Just before the traffic light at the end of the off-ramp,
you will see a sign reading "Buck Jones Road" with an arrow pointing to
the right. Take this short ramp which will put you directly onto Buck
Jones Road. Take the first available left turn, right before the Shiny
Diner. Once in the driveway, make one more left turn to get you driving
back towards the entrance to Borders.
From points in Cary, take Maynard Rd until you get to Walnut
St (by Cary Towne Center). Depending on the direction you're coming from,
turn right or left onto Walnut St, so that you are driving past Cary Towne
Center and Barnes and Noble Bookstore. If you pass Cary High School, you've
gone the wrong way! Take Walnut St for about 1.5 miles, until Buck Jones
Rd., right before the intersection with US 1/64. Turn left onto Buck Jones
Rd. Take the first available left turn, right before the Shiny Diner.
Once in the driveway, make one more left turn to get you driving back

Outer Banks Weekend
Colington Island, NC
Thirty-three members of TVS took part in our second retreat. Thanks
to the generosity of Richmond member Jerry Cook, who donated use of his
beach house, we had an inexpensive and great long beach weekend. We were
again very lucky to have our dear friend, ex-cattle rancher turned vegan
author and celebrity, "Mad Cowboy" (www.madcowboy.com)
Howard Lyman and his wife Willow Jean, join us! (Read a review of Howard's
1996 TVS visit in The
Grapevine.)
Recipes for the delicious meals that were served can be found at www.trianglevegsociety.org/june00retreatrecipes.html.
In addition, several pictures were taken during the weekend, and you can
view them in the Photo Album!
Wednesday, June 28 - 7:00 pm
Restaurant Review, Spartacus Grill
Waverly Place (intersection of Kildaire Farm Road and Tryon Road), Cary
Spartacus Grill phone: 852-5050
Please contact Kathy Marx (468-9435 or km0702@earthlink.net)
if you plan to attend this restaurant review, so that she can make reservations
if needed. Spartacus Grill features Greek food, with a number of vegetarian
as well as some vegan options. They are also willing to make modifications
to their menu. The restaurant basically faces Tryon Road, so it would
probably be easier to locate in the shopping center if you enter the plaza
from Tryon Road.
If you arrive early, you may want to check out the new Wellspring Grocery
in Waverly Place (on the Kildaire Farm Road side of the plaza). This new
store is larger than the one in Raleigh as it used to be the location
of a Harris Teeter.

This year, TVS will have a literature booth on July 1 and 2, and we need

will also get you in for free! Please contact Brian at doveganpeas@yahoo.com
or 969-9287 if you can help.

to carpool over to Jordan Lake for a swim. The picnic, at their house,
will be from 3:00-7:00 pm. They are at 2540 Seaforth Rd, Pittsboro, 919-542-2611.

your fancy if you want to! For those interested, we may try to go as a
group to see fireworks afterwards.

Let Dilip know by June 15 if you
would like to go so he can get $38 tickets at a discount of $24 and we
can go as a group to see the Paul Taylor Dance Company. There is a post-performance
discussion this night, as well.
From the ADF writeup, "Heralded as our 'greatest living choreographer'
(Newsweek) ... he has created a broad spectrum of dances - joyous, terrifying,
hilarious and awe-inspiring - and his richly diverse repertoire reflects
the cultural heritage of a career spanning five decades. Immersing audiences
in the unforgettable athleticism, lyricism, humor and precision of Mr.
Taylor's artistry, performances by the Paul Taylor Dance Company have
long been a tradition at ADF. 'If Paul Taylor is not the best choreographer
to emerge in any style anywhere in the world in the past quarter century,
who is?' (The Times of London) 'No modern dance choreographer is as versatile,
witty, menacing and physically joyful' (The Washington Post)"

Street Market. According to Taylor Davenport, a food critic, "If you're
looking for authentic Mexican... it's the real enchilada!"
Saturday, August 12 - 7:00 pm
Raw Foods Talk and Potluck, Presented by Amy Adler
The potluck will take place at the Durham Friends Meeting House (see
map). It's a standard vegetarian potluck, vegan preferred, but this
time it's also raw foods encouraged (but not required). Amy Adler, who
will be speaking about raw foods, has provided some suggestions below
on dishes to make. Please remember to bring your own place setting, anything
required to serve your item, and a list of ingredients in your dish.
Hints from Amy Adler on Raw Food Dishes
"Folks should keep in mind that simple things are great ... however, if
people want to get inventive, they can try making a raw fruit pie by placing
a half pound of dates and a quarter pound of raw almonds in a food processor.
Blend them to make a crust and place in a regular pie pan. Then, they
can put fruit on top of the crust. I usually put bananas in the food processor
(after I've cleaned out the dates and almonds!) and whir them up into
a sauce which I place on top of sliced bananas, peaches, or whatever I
have. Freeze for maybe an hour or two or if frozen for a longer time just
thaw a bit before eating."
"Another idea would be a cole slaw with cabbage (of course) and any
other veggies you've got (such as shredded carrots) plus a sauce to top
it made out of tomatoes and avocadoes. If you can find raw carob powder
(can be a bit tough to find) you can make a "chocolate" sauce by mixing
the carob powder, dates, and water in a food processor. I have dipped
strawberries into this sauce. ... If you put the sauce into the refrigerator
it will likely harden into more of a pudding, depending on how thin you
made the sauce originally."
"Gazpacho, which many folks can find in regular cookbooks, is a nice
idea for a summer meal. I don't have a recipe handy but if folks put tomatoes
in a blender and add chopped veggies, (spices too, if desired) they can
make a nice soup. The same goes for any veggies you've got in the house.
I put greens, avocadoes, tomatoes, a dash of sea salt and maybe a sweet
bell pepper into a blender. It makes a great soup and no need to measure
ingredients--tastes great every time."
"Another idea would be a cucumber salad. Just get some cucumbers, slice
them, and add whatever fresh herb you have around (I've made it with fresh
mint) and add a drop of sea salt, and some fresh squeezed lemon juice."
"Fruit salad, a simple idea perhaps, is always great... If you want
more ideas check out www.living-foods.com."
